About FUSION HIP HOP Dance Competition

FUSION XI: DIMENSIONS OF A GENERATION

UCSD students promoting cultural awareness through Hip Hop Dance

La Jolla, CA - On Sunday, March 28th, 2010, two UC San Diego student organizations, Multi-Asian Student Association (MASA) and Second to None (220) dance company, will work together to host the most highly anticipated Hip Hop Dance competition on the West Coast. FUSION invites talented dancers of all ages and ethnicities from across the country to celebrate music through various dance styles and cultural exhibitions. The theme of FUSION XI, "Dimensions of a Generation", will highlight the impact of the generation gap between Asian American families and their role in the hip hop community.  In addition, young Asian-Americans are becoming increasingly prominent in the hip hop community, as more and more are being recognized in dance, music, and film. With this in mind, MASA and 220 strive to promote cultural awareness in the hip hop community.

Since its inception in 1999, attendance has drastically increased, seating over 3,000 attendees, and is now known as the largest student-run Asian directed event at UCSD. FUSION, hosted at UCSD’s RIMAC Arena, has long been an avenue for many of today’s most popular crews, including Jabbawockeez, Kaba Modern & Team Millennia. Winning two years in a row "Event Of The Year" from the Annual V.ENT Dance Awards, FUSION is forecasting to grow even larger. The event showcases performers from all over the nation and has viewers across the globe. Arranged by the efforts solely of college students, the success of FUSION rests on the diligence and determination of MASA and 220. Our goal is to recognize the influence of hip hop music and dance in Asian youth culture and to also to bring to focus the lesser-known elements of a pan-Asian identity.

MASA Multi Asian Student Association

The Multi-Asian Student Association, otherwise known as MASA, was founded in 1999 by Kien Vu. The Multi-Asian Student Association is a social-cultural organization dedicated to educating the community of the rich diversity of the Asian student body of UCSD. Through interactive social and cultural events, we strive to spread awareness that Asian-Americans are not one culture but rather a mixture of many diverse cultures. We create a fun, comfortable, stereotype-free environment for individuals from all ethnic backgrounds to come together and learn about our differences as well as discover our similarities. Unlike many organizations, MASA has no membership fees or obligations: you're already in! Each year MASA continues to grow. We continue to promote togetherness among the diverse UCSD student body and will continue to create a positive environment for all. We are one family. We are one heartbeat. We are MASA.

220 Second to None

If 220 was a woman, she'd be my perfect companion; an embodiment of the unique personalities on the team. She'd be that girl I'll never forget. She allows me to move my body to the heart of the music, to move our audiences, and to move with one purpose and one love. Dancing with her is how I let my heart groove with freedom. When you love someone, you want to better yourself, make changes, grow, struggle, and learn for that person. I wake up with thoughts of her in my mind, and she gets me through the days because I know I'll dance with her again.

If 220 was a woman, our passion for dance would only be exceeded by our love for each other. We hold close our past to define our future, and while we're hungry to be innovative, we stay humble at heart. Dancing with her, that's Second To None.
