Fusion

FUSION is a highly anticipated hip hop dance competition in California that has been hosted by two UC San Diego student organizations, Second to None (220) and the Multi-Asian Student Association (MASA). It is an event show that recognizes and applauds diversity in the realm of dance, especially in the growth of participating Asians and Asian Americans, while showcasing performers from all over the nation to viewers across the globe.

As of FUSION XIII, MASA will be the sole host of FUSION. Arranged solely through the efforts of college students, the success of FUSION rests on the diligence and determination of the members of MASA. In preparations for the upcoming show, the staff of FUSION XIII continues to be motivated towards recognizing the influence of hip hop dance and music within Asian and Asian-American youth culture. Therefore, FUSION hopes to bring to focus the lesser-known elements of a pan-Asian identity.

While bringing talented dancers of all ages and ethnicities from across the country together, FUSION celebrate the importance of artistic movement through various dance styles and music. As young Asian-Americans are becoming increasingly prominent in the hip hop community and more recognized in dance, music, and film, FUSION strives to continue the tradition that promotes cultural awareness in the hip hop community.

Since its inception in 1999, attendance at FUSION has increased dramatically. In the dance community, FUSION has long been an avenue for many of today’s most popular crews, including Jabbawockeez, Kaba Modern, Team Millennia and Poreotics. FUSION has won the title for the “Event Of The Year” from the Annual V.ENT Dance Awards in 2010 and 2011, and has also been nominated as “Best College Competition” by the World of Dance (WOD) Awards in 2011.

FUSION isn’t just a hip-hop dance competition. It’s an amalgam of talent, dedication, and culture that also seeks to educate its viewers, day of and after, about the Asian-American presence in the hip-hop community. It is a unique competition in the sense that it also has a focus on the cultural aspect of the community, bringing Asian-American talent into the lime-light.
